I don't have TiVo myself anymore, but my ex had it and I ended up watching WAY too much TV. My parents have fallen in to that trap too, even though they claim they haven't. Because it is so easy, they started getting in to more shows that are on past their bed times. TiVo does make skipping commercials and keeping up with shows you want to watch super easy! But I can tell you that TiVo is awesome. When it tries to choose shows that it thinks we would like, I'm not so thrilled. And when it changes a station in the middle of something you are watching in order to tape something else it thinks you will like, I'm doubly not thrilled. However, the ease of recording shows is soooooo much better, that it completely makes up for any small inconveniences. Just get good at finding the 'last' or 'previous' button on your controller. And I guess I should say that every now and then, it guesses correctly on something we'd like to see. So the suggestions aren't all bad.
